And So It Begins…

Greetings my friend!
If you are reading this then you are about to embark on the path of hearth and hand. The land, it beckons you, for you feel a need to be less reliant on the will of others and seek comfort in being self sustained.
I will not pretend I am a especially gifted in the realm of homesteading, for I am not. I am but of the common folk, like you possibly. Gold does not fill my coffers, fame does not christen my doorstep. I am but a man who seeks a healthier life after a few battles with most unfortuatous of illnesses. If you would like, you can read more about that on the journal page entitled “Our Tale”. To make haste of the matter, I was…. indisposed for several years in illness and pain. I let my gardens and land grow unkempt and unruly. The “easy way” became the “only way” that i could manage…..and while i do not regret my transgressions as it was a neccessity of the time, my health has returned to me and I need ot make up for lost time, lost ground, and reclaim my homestead for my health and family.
Join me my friend, on my quest to becoming as self-reliant as possible during these modern times. Not as one with the riches of a small kingdom, but as a common folk. One who, like you perhaps, walks the path of the 9-5 laborer, whose hand and mind are required elsewhere to make a means to support thier family. Someone who dreams of one day breaking those modern shackles and living truly free under one’s own rule instead of under the thumb of a venomous system designed to rot mind and body alike. Join me as I see just how far I can go and how quickly i can get there, for illness has already plagued me twice, I dare not test fate a third time.

Of Our Present Means

If you are familiar with my tale thus far, then you know I have a small foot out the door already in persuit of my ambitions. For this journal was an afterthough in the matter, a byproduct if you will. I wanted to chronicle my path as a means to potentially help others in thier own journey toward similar goals. I wanted others to see that if my family and I (a family of far less than ideal circumstancees and means) could do it, then so could they.
To begin with, on this stretch of our homsteading adventrue, we already posess some of what many of you may already posess. Though we don’t have much in comparison to some other well established hoomesteaders, we do have a small headstart from starting from scratch:

  • Roughly 12 laying hens and two roosters
  • 4 Nigerian dwarf does (.no male as of yet.)
  • a moderate sized garden bed
  • 2 dwarf almond trees (although a tree fell on one and split it in half)
  • around 8 apple trees around 2 years old (not bearing yet)

That is all we have accumlated in the means of food production thus far in our journeys since returning to our land and recovering from my sickness. By no means enough to feed a family of five, but a decent, humble start to what will be a new path on our travels to living by sun, sweat, and soil.
So gather ’round the hearth my friend, warm your weary bones, soothe your tired soul, and share in our tales and learn by our mistakes and successes.
